Why did you choose this profession?
I accidentally chose a career in pensions if I’m honest! I have always had a keen interest in maths and finance and completed a degree in Economics (BA Hons) at Strathclyde University in 2005. I was a little unsure what I wanted to do next and, after a short period of time working for a bank, I applied for a job as a pensions administrator with Aon. That was back in July 2007 and I have remained in pensions since then, staying with Aon until July 2014 where I became a senior administrator and latterly a business analyst. I then moved to Hymans Robertson where I worked as an actuarial analyst until January 2023. I moved to Intellica in February 2023.
How did it tie in with your overall career plans?
I wanted to use my existing skills and knowledge but try something different with a young and rapidly growing company.
How did you get your job at Intellica?
I was recommended by a friend and former colleague.
What was the application process like?
Straightforward. The interview process was very professional and thorough.
Is it a 9 to 5 job?
Broadly speaking, yes. It is an 8-hour working day excluding breaks. The core hours are 10am-4pm which gives me flexibility around childcare, which is very beneficial!
What skills are useful in this profession?
An aptitude for maths and numeracy, and a good grasp of Excel is key. Soft skills are just as important though: being able to work as part of a team, ask appropriate questions, contribute ideas etc. are vital.
Do you have any advice for anyone wanting to enter the profession?
Be open minded and flexible. The pensions industry is vast and constantly evolving. There are a large number of career paths and opportunities available so it may take a little bit of time to find your ideal role.
