“Dream as if you’ll live forever. Live as if you’ll die today” quipped the American Idol, James Dean. He wasn’t far wrong with his philosophy. Following your dreams is the right call. I’m not suggesting that anyone under the age of 18 actually ever dreamt of working in pensions, it’s the industry we all rather passively found our way into – but what a find it is. A rich coal seam requiring deep technical subject matter expertise and retaining some of the brightest sparks in the employable world.
Yes, it’s not that good as a conversation piece at parties, one often must protest they do not sell pensions, but day-to-day it’s a richly rewarding pursuit. The trick is, to really super charge your career in pensions, is one-or-two choice moves here and there. Changing employers really can be a career supercharger. New tricks, fresh money and more importantly a satisfying developing sense of your employability/portability.
It’s dauting, but careers are seldom forged in the comfort zone. Time to step up and step out.
