London Pensions Fund Authority - Board Member

The Mayor of London is seeking to appoint one additional investment expert to join the London Pensions Fund Authority (LPFA) Board.

The London Pensions Fund Authority (LPFA) is the biggest local government pension scheme (LGPS) provider in London and one of the largest in the UK. It serves over 300 ‘not for profit’ employers, with over a quarter of a million members and manages assets of some £5.5 billion.

The authority is at the forefront of delivering a more efficient LGPS, most notably through its partnership with Lancashire County Pension Fund. The Mayor expects the LPFA, with Lancashire, to develop the Local Pensions Partnership (LPP) into the leading LGPS pool being set up to make the LGPS more efficient.

The LPFA's central purpose is to pay scheme members' pensions as they fall due and the Authority is currently renowned for exceptional service to members and their employers. The Mayor expects the Board to ensure that this performance is maintained by the LPP. 

Further, Board Members need to ensure that the LPFA’s core responsibilities, such as setting employer contributions and strategic asset allocation, are fully and appropriately discharged. In order to achieve this, the LPFA will need to act as a robust shareholder in overseeing the LPP, ensuring that it operates efficiently and maintains an undiluted focus on the public interest.

The Mayor is seeking to recruit an additional Board Member with knowledge and experience of investing pension fund assets. You should have a:

  • passion for investment;
  • commercial awareness and pragmatism;
  • corporate business building experience; and
  • contrarian/questioning approach to consensus.

The Mayor would be particularly interested in receiving applications from investment professionals who are currently involved in making investment decisions, rather than providing investment advice. All applicants need to be able to be active supporters of the LPFA’s Climate Change policy and committed to advancing its implementation by 2020.

This is a high-profile opportunity to help drive the Mayor’s pensions policies and help deliver value for money for London.  Length of appointments are to up to 4 years.
