Senior Pension Management Consultants

Overview

Our Public Sector Consulting business area provides actuarial, benefit and governance consultancy services to UK Public Service Pension Schemes, primarily the Local Government Pension Scheme.

We are inviting applications for the position of Senior Pensions Consultant, Benefits and Governance.  Depending on experience, this role may include being Head of the Benefits and Governance Team.  This is a permanent position - happy to consider full or part-time (at least 3 days) working requests.

Our preference is for the role to be based in our central London office, with the opportunity to work from home two to three days per week in line with our smart working policy, however, we will also consider applications from applicants seeking to work from our other offices. 

The role will involve travel to client sites and other Barnett Waddingham offices across the UK.

Responsibilities

Team leadership, management and service and business development

  • Strategic leadership of the team, developing and growing the services offered and delivered - if applicable
  • Line management: 1:1s, reviews, training and development
  • Checking a range of member and employer calculations
  • Hosting, or taking an active role, in team meetings
  • Preparing quotes and tender responses and attending new business pitches
  • Developing relationships with business introducers
  • Hosting client, industry and Barnett Waddingham meetings, events and seminars
Client management 
  • Understanding the market, client and the client’s aims and objectives
  • General consultancy, dealing with clients’ telephone queries and day-to-day correspondence providing technical advice where needed
  • Hosting and attending client meetings where applicable
Research and development
  • Maintaining an understanding of pensions tax legislation, and Pensions Regulator and governance requirements as they develop
  • Developing and maintaining knowledge of other public service schemes as required
  • Preparing responses to consultations on behalf of Barnett Waddingham
  • Attending and speaking at external seminars and conferences
  • Researching new topics on behalf of the Firm, reporting back to the actuarial and benefits and governance teams
Technical Skills
  • Provision of benefits and governance advice, guidance and administration support service to clients
  • Peer reviewing significant pieces of advice in accordance with professional requirements
  • Completing governance and administration reviews for clients
  • Delivering presentations and training to the various stakeholders groups
  • Preparing technical and explanatory text for briefing notes, blogs, newsletters, guides, policy and procedure notes etc
  • Completing complex individual member and pension tax calculations
  • Producing complex reports and documents in an understandable manner
Other internal responsibilities
  • Prepare management plans, budgets and reports as required
  • Accurate and timely completion of Taskstream time recording and workflow system
  • Internal committee responsibilities
  • Helping other practice areas wherever relevant or necessary
  • Lead and help as necessary with recruitment

Qualifications

Experience of carrying out and explaining complex tax calculations in respect of the Local Government Pension Scheme, or another public service defined benefit pension scheme

Experience of dealing with governance matters in connection with a public service pension scheme

Desirable to have a pensions or business qualification with a recognised professional body

IT skills to perform all aspects of work efficiently including WORD, Excel and PowerPoint

Good presentation skills to small and large audiences both face to face and online, and able to effectively host and chair meetings and events
High professionalism skills
